I could be wrong, but I seem to recall these were powered by an engine that was a Rolls Royce knockoff. Being not a turbofan and thus quite hot, it wouldn't take much thrust to discourage tailgaters.

The Mig-15 used an almost direct copy of the Rolls Royce Nene ( Klimov RD-45 ), the Tumansky R-25 in the Mig-21 is a native design derived from the first twin spool turbojet designed by the Soviet Union.

Right, I knew about the Nene copy, I was just thinking the design DNA had carried on a while after that.
